Mel Gibson: Copping to it or copping out?

It's not exactly clear just how far Mel Gibson's anti-Semitism goes. One source says that he had turned down the Michael Douglas role in "Jewel of the Nile" because "Jew" was in the title. He is also quoted as saying that he thought Hebrew was something a guy does to make coffee. Gibson also thought that Juddhaism was a worship of all things Judy Garland, because he is anti-gay.

Regardless, there is no more denying his true feelings about anyone and anything related to the Jewish religion. How convenient that he is deflecting the truth about his anti-Semitic beliefs onto an excuse of alcoholism! Anyone who's ever been drunk knows that when you're under the influence of alcohol, you're even more likely to say what you really think. All inhibitions disappear, your guard is down, and you reveal your true beliefs. For Gibson to now claim that his anti-Semitic remarks were not what he thinks, is simply put - Mishigas!

This is yet one more opportunity for his team to spin this in his favor. Poor Mel - he's been battling alcohol addiction his whole life. Poor Mel - he's going into rehab.

This coming from the same man who made the clearly anti-Semitic "Passion of the Christ" and turned bad press into millions in his pocket. This coming from the same man who has another film coming out at the end of this year, and needed to get his name in the press.

Wanna bet he'll do Oprah? (I don't mean he'll literally "do" Oprah, because she's not a White Catholic, and who knows what he really thinks of African-Americans?) But wanna bet he'll do the talk show circuit, baring his soul, asking for forgiveness?

So far his "apologies" have been written statements through a publicist. Come on Mel. If you're so ashamed and realize that you just bit the hand that made you famous (since Hollywood has a large Jewish contingent), why aren't you personally appearing LIVE in a televised press conference?
